Microdermabrasion the gentler way to look younger

Microdermabrasion the gentler way to peel away the years

The use of Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA’s) has come in for a certain amount of criticism because research from America suggests that the procedure may actually be harmful to skin, causing redness, blisters and abnormal cell renewal. A report by the US FDA said “ An industry-sponsored study found that people who use AHA products have greater sensitivity to sun, raising the spectre of photo-ageing and skin cancer.”

Fortunately there is a gentler, less aggressive manner in which facial skin can be renewed, reducing the appearance of age, lines and wrinkles. Crystal Clear International recommends microdermabrasion as the safest way to exfoliate since it uses a staged process to achieve a fresher more youthful appearance.

Sharon Hilditch, Managing Director of Crystal Clear, compares the use of some AHA’s as similar to a plane which removes the top layer in one fell swoop, whereas Crystal Clear microdermabrasion is like a very smooth sandpaper. She says, “Obviously, if you peel away the top level in one procedure, the new skin is bound to be extremely sensitive to environmental conditions, particularly the sun. But with microdermabrasion using aluminium oxide crystals, while it sounds aggressive, the controlled blast that exfoliates the skin is in fact very gentle, causing only a tingling sensation. And because we recommend several treatments over as many weeks, the process is gradual and allows the skin to renew itself in stages rather than in one dramatic phase.”

A single Crystal Clear treatment costs between £30 and £40.
